Govt contemplates to set up 2 Veterinary Universities in JK : Rather : SRINAGAR, JUNE 13: Minister for Finance and Ladakh Affairs, Abdul Rahim Rather today said that the Government was contemplating to set up two Veterinary Universities in the State one each at Shuhama, Kashmir and R.S.Pura Jammu in view of constant demand of the Scientists of the State. The Minister was interacting with a delegation of Veterinary Scientists Association headed by its President, Prof. Saleem Iqbal, who called on him today at Civil Secretariat. During the course of deliberations, the Minister assured the delegation that the proposal to set up the Universities will be considered on merit at appropriate levels. He said Government accords priority to promote the veterinary sector in the State and it is mandatory to establish the Universities to prepare the manpower for the development of this sector. He impressed upon the Scientists to work hard to promote this important sector which have great potential in the State. Earlier, the delegation in its Memorandum highlighted the necessity of establishment of separate Veterinary Universities in both the divisions of the State. The Memorandum stated that animal husbandry has been contributing 22 per cent to National Agricultural GDP and contribution of animal husbandry sector to agricultural GDP of mountainous states is more than 50 per cent as 20 to 50 per cent population of hilly and mountainous terrains is landless and depends on this sector. Despite the meagre budgetary support, the contribution of livestock sector to GDP jumped to over two hundred per cent during the last decade, the memorandum stated.
