Govt set to reform CAN.....................by ekantipur KATHMANDU, JUL 19 - Putting the legal complications on a back burner, the Youth and Sports Ministry said it will work ahead to reform Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) terming the current committee ineligible to run the sport. Nepali cricket has been in a halt after the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) filed corruption charges against 10 CAN officials who have since stepped aside. The country’s law doesn’t have the provision of overthrowing an elected body but Youth and Sports Minister Purushottam Paudel said the process of reforming CAN will begin at the earliest. “We will go according to the law of the country. If there are no legal provisions to do so, then we will do it by legal amendments,” said Paudel adding a committee unwilling to be accountable should not cling on to power. The Sports Ministry recently sent a letter at CAN demanding clarification over the $82,000 fined by ICC, failure to perform duties and clear unpaid dues, for which the cricket governing body retaliated by filing a case at the Appellate Court. However, the Appellate Court in its July 14 decision sided with CAN meaning the ministry was right to seek clarification from the cricket governing body. “CAN members are not performing their duties and they are also not able to recover the unpaid dues. When asked for clarification, they don’t respond. There is no point for such officials to cling on to their posts,” fumed the minister. It is widely believed that the controversies surrounding CAN has saw Nepal lose the hosting of ICC World Cricket League Division-III — slated for October 26 to November 2 — a tournament that will determine Nepali cricket’s status for the next four years. The ICC and ACC have refrained from providing any fund to CAN for the last six months. Paudel said the Ministry has every reason to reform CAN. “The CIAA has already recommended the government to wipe out the current committee and the appellate court has also decided in our favour. No one is against the reformation process of CAN. If CAN seeks court intervention again, we are ready to deal with it,” said Paudel.
