Govt urged to prioritise National Minimum Wage - By John Motlogelwa Government must prioritise the process of establishing the National Minimum Wage. This is the call from unions after a high level meeting at the National Economic Development and Labour Council (Nedlac) on the issue was cancelled on Wednesday due to Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa’s unavailability. Ramaphosa chairs the Committee of Principals, comprising labour, government, business and community. The meeting was due to kick-start the process of thrashing out the details of how to implement the National Minimum Wage. The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) says it is worried that delays to this process could play into the hands of those opposed to the wage proposal. It says business has largely been dragging its feet since it was agreed at last years Labour Relations Indaba to establish the National Minimum Wage. Federation of Trade Unions of South Africa (Fedusa) says it’s critical to implement the National Mining Wage in order to reduce increasing inequalities between the rich and the poor. While The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) is not represented at Nedlac after being kicked out of Cosatu last year, it hopes to influence the process through the public hearings starting in February. Government hopes to implement the National Minimum Wage after July this year. Article provided with the kind courtesy of sabc.co.za
