Grade 11 Life Sciences (y) : What is the effect of smoking on Gaseous Exchange? • Cigarette smoke causes a variety of diseases: o Lung cancer, coronary heart disease, stroke, emphysema and chronic bronchitis • The three dangerous poisons that occur in cigarette smoke are: nicotine, tar and carbon monoxide • Cause the hardening of the arteries – atherosclerosis • Stimulates the secretion of adrenalin, which leads to an increase in heart rate and blood pressure • Tar paralyses the small cilia of the air passages which prevent them from functioning. Therefore, foreign particles cannot be transported out of the passages. The tar builds up and can eventually lead to lung cancer. • Smoking also causes the walls of the alveoli to tear and form holes. Blood capillaries also disintegrate and gaseous exchange becomes difficult. This can lead to emphysema. • Lack of oxygen to the can have an effect on brain cells and their functioning
