Gradually, we are consolidating a society that secludes the fragile and alienates the weak. It started with the establishment of old age homes. Now we have what is termed as school for babies as young as six months, where mothers feel liberated from the tirade of uneasiness and all the pangs of guilt that dumping their babies with total strangers so they can sneak off to their crampy cubicles in corporate establishments, would normally invoke. As much as I appreciate the argument that Mummy needs the money Mummy makes at her job in order to cater for her baby, I also do immensely appreciate, in unnerving dread and staunch awareness of all the hideous fantasies brewing in the dark elusiveness of the mutilated mind of some faceless pervert constantly on the prowl in the neighbourhood, the grave danger in giving an individual you may not so much as remotely know, exhaustive custody of such a delicate, fragile and tender being. A three-year old might be able to tell you all the disturbing details and all the uncomfortable places that Teacher may have on occasion, happened to probe with her filthy finger, but at six months, a baby that tender, that fragile, Mummy will have to watch grow to endure the psychological trauma of a debilitating childhood experience, the specific details and actual memory of which will forever remain foggy. One is left to wonder how such a precarious practice was ever enacted into our mainstream culture. But then again, I guess capitalism is all the justification required to enable a responsibility as primal and as sensitive as motherhood to be casually and conveniently outsourced.
