Graeme Souness believes Manchester United manager David Moyes must beat Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea when they go head to head in the second week of next season. United are away at Swansea on the opening day of the next campaign, while the Blues face Hull at home, but the two sides are then scheduled to lock horns at Old Trafford on Saturday August 24. Former Liverpool captain Souness believes it will be a must-win game for United, as victory over Chelsea would send an early message to their title rivals. Souness told Sky Sports News: “As a manager, when you get the fixtures, you want to win your first game and get off to a good start. But the second game they play, Chelsea at home, that’s the one he knows he must win.” Mourinho is expected to be active in the transfer market this summer, and Souness believes the Blues will be much-improved next season as they bid to claim United’s Premier League crown. “If Moyes can put a marker down early against what will be one of his biggest rivals for the Premier League then he will have made a statement. “But that will be a very hard game because Chelsea will be particularly strong next year.” United won their 20th top-flight crown – 13th Premier League title – by a comfortable 11-point margin last season, with City finishing second and Chelsea further behind in third.
