Graffiti in Wanganui on a downward trend. Since the graffiti team was set up in Wanganui in mid 2008, there has been a steady downward trend in reported graffiti, especially in 2012 and 2013. The figures supplied by the Council are as follows: Graffiti team activity 2008-2013 Year Total paintouts 2008 (July to December) 1080 2009 2843 2010 2770 2011 1914 2012 890 2013 512 The downward trend continues through 2014 in comparison with the same months in 2013. The increase in August might just have something to do with the elections. Graffiti reported through our system until the end of August 2014 (compared with the same period in 2013): 2014 2013 January 53 87 February 53 46 March 57 49 April 38 97 May 31 57 June 45 92 July 35 * August 53 33 *Figure for July 2013 not available The Council encourages people to report graffiti via the graffiti hotline, phone 349 3144, or email [email protected]. The sooner it is reported, the sooner it can be removed. Rapid removal is one of the best ways to prevent future graffiti. A report in the British newspaper, ‘The Independent,’ quotes the most senior police officer in Scotland saying that “Graffiti and other forms of public vandalism are dying off as people turn to social media to vent their anger instead.” Instead on spray painting your mark on buildings or tagging your identity on a bridge, you do it on Facebook or Twitter instead.
