Graffiti of the Celeste (2010) In 2010, Artistic Director Angela Liong continued her research of the climate change dance project with Graffiti of the Celeste. Inspired by the ruins of Angkor Wat, the idea of modern and ancient time interfaced through nature’s mark-making (of strangling tree roots) that subverted man-made structures was borne. Hence the title “celestial graffiti”. The production focused on the temporal element of the deteriorating environment. Similar to the essence of graffiti, Angela approached the movement as vernacular scribbling and worked with Composer Joyce Koh on a complex urban soundscape that etched into the stark stage installation of vertical vinyl strips created by artist Yeo Chee Kiong which resembled a pared down, dilapidated temple. DID YOU KNOW? This production probably has one of the most dramatic and bizarre costumes to show mutated creatures due to extreme climate change. One dancer wore a gigantic suit that looked like a big plump mermaid. The fish shaped costume, inspired by the Chinese Book of Mountains and Seas had 4 huge drooping breasts and allowed only limited movement of wriggling and crawling on the floor. The rotund suit made of thick sponge was constructed by Tan Beng Tian, the Artistic Director of The Finger Players.
