Graham McTavish: "Some part of who Dwalin became was led by his physicality and his appearance. A big, tattooed Dwarf with axes strapped to his back and scars on his face is not going to be at the back in a fight. He and Thorin have a very close relationship, forged from childhood and facing enemies together, always at the front of a battle. Dwalin feels differently about different Dwarves in the Company. Some he knows well, but others, particularly Ori, Nori and Dori, Bifur, Bofur and Bombur are untested and, therefore, to be kept at arm’s length until they prove themselves worthy of his trust. Dwalin has a soft spot for Ori, who he quietly admires for being so determined to come on the Quest against the wishes of his family. He protects the naive young Dwarf in battle, and keeps a watchful eye on him throughout the journey. I think Dwalin admires this youngest, weakest member of the Company who is, nevertheless, willing to risk his life. All of these choices came from long discussion with the other actors, with Peter, and with Fran and Philippa.”
