Gramma Tickle says ... FARTHER and FURTHER serve equally as comparatives for the adverb FAR. However, contrary to the relatively lenient terms of contemporary usage, there is a traditional distinction between them. Briefly, where FARTHER refers to literal, or physical, distance, FURTHER is more figurative. In cases that seem ambiguous (as in I am further along in my book, where distance is measurable in terms either of pages or plot), FURTHER is the option with more wiggle room. I can’t run any farther. I wont discuss the subject any further.
