Grandfathers . . . . thinking about my dear (maternal) granddaddy, - TopicsExpress

Grandfathers . . . . thinking about my dear (maternal) granddaddy, Papa Reeves. He was just such a wonderful person. He was a devoted Christian, and never missed Sunday School and church, if he could possibly help it, even getting a ride from one of the church brothers, after he got too old to drive anymore. He used to receive special little pins to put on his lapel of his shirt or coat collar, to honor him for Perfect Attendance in Sunday School. Today, Oct. 15 was his birthday. Wow, he would be VERY old, if he was still living, because he was born on Oct. 15, 1885. So, lets see.... that would have made him 128 years old today. I dont think theres anybody still alive thats THAT old. I was very close to him when I was growing up. You see, my parents were 40 and 45 when I was born, and my maternal Grandmother (his wife), Mama Reeves, died when I was 5 years old. While I do have some sweet memories of her, too, there are more happy times that I got to share with him. And some sad times, as well. When my Daddy died, when I was just 11 years old, leaving my Mom and I to live alone, my granddaddy came and moved in with us. We used to mow the lawn together, and we would sometimes good-naturedly quarrel with each other about the best way to do things, but out of respect, I would end up listening to him. He had a stroke when he was 82 (I was a teenager, 14 I think), and I helped take care of him when he came home from the hospital. And I dont regret one minute of it; I am thankful to God that I had the opportunity to do so. Happy Birthday (in Heaven) Papa Reeves!
