Gratitude: 1. My dad, or Pa, as we called him. He had an insatiable appetite for learning, reading everything he could get his hands on and tried to learn about everything. You couldnt mention much that he didnt know something about. He was a hard worker, and never stopped from daylight to bedtime, always something to do, gardening, checking on cows, taking care of chickens and dogs and cats. The day he died in a car crash at age 89, he had been in the garden, checking the green beans and had called me to come and pick them since they had already canned all they wanted. 2. My mom. She mothered and cooked for all six of us and all the assorted kids we dragged home, including school friends, church friends, family members, and college friends and acquaintances. Some came for an afternoon or overnight, several came for weekends or even weeks at at time and she loved them all. A roaster full of chicken or liver and onions, a dishpan full of hot rolls, cobblers and pies. Her grandkids had the run of the kitchen on Saturday nights, with the only instructions, Try whatever you want, but remember you have to eat it. She also made dozens, even hundreds of beautiful quilts during her life and gave most all of them away. She joined the Happy Homemakers Club that made and gave away hundreds more to people with new babies, people whose houses had burned, and for benefits for people with medical problems. 3. My grandparents and extended family. Solid people, salt of the earth, a place to build my foundation for a lifetime.
