Gratituesday. Grateful for: my public library, where every day I see people of all backgrounds using their free workspace, reading space, meeting space. Yesterday - a Bounce and Sing group with toddlers and babies, an elderly gentleman researching lead mining, young people looking for jobs information, silver surfers learning to use the internet, sixth-formers getting extra tuition. And a poet, using the free Wi-Fi all day without having to buy a coffee. Its open late on Tuesday and Friday too. Many middle-class folk sing the praises of the library without USING it, which is the only way to keep it alive for others. Go to your local library and *borrow* those expensive recipe books you only use every now and then - those books on craft or gardening that you consult once a year - the trashy novels that you buy at Smiths and then clutter up your shelves. Teach your children that there is a huge free store of books in their own town. Order the literary novels or poetry books the library doesnt have on its shelves and WAIT for a week or two to get them. Support your library the only way that counts. Think of it as a redistribution of education. And if that seems like a good idea, then share this post but also DO IT.
