Greasing your bearings is like a day at the beach. Enjoy! Allan Rienstra Ultrasound Applications Specialist | Owner | International Sales Channel Manager Imagine for a second you are running along a beach, ankle deep in water. Your legs effortlessly drive your feet with each step while a small amount of water splashes cooly around your ankles. You feel as though you could run forever and never get tired. Now imagine running knee deep or even waste deep in water. Your legs tire quickly. The water surrounds you and makes movement feel awkward and unnatural. You may grunt, groan, and strain until After a few seconds you give up from exhaustion. An proper, or over lubed bearing has similarities to my analogy. Optimization, power consumption, fatigue, heat, lube degradation, component failure are all causal effects. Grease serves a simple purpose. Create a thin film between rolling elements to reduce friction. Thats it! Nothing more. What is a simple and easy-to-use indicator of frictional change? An ultrasound meter that listens and digitally measures changes in sound energy. The second part is key (MEASURES). Create an ultrasonic baseline and schedule greasing intervals around an 8-10dBuV increase. Slowly replace old grease with new grease with your calibrated grease gun. When you dBuV levels return to baseline stop greasing. Repeat on whatever frequency is prescribed by your programme (ie., weekly, monthly). Dont grease sealed bearings Dont pump the grease too fast Dont pump your motor windings full of grease Be aware of clogging and gumming from old grease stopping new grease from entering Open the drain port of your bearing, if equipped Clean the drain port in case clogged with old dry grease Your ultrasound meter should indicate Crest Factor. Trend this value too.
