Ecallawh “For every action, there is a reaction.” (Unknown) Grandma always say,” Make sure that you are not caught in any compromising position that would make you feel guilty.” As a people, we do not adhere to that tenet, so when we are caught in a compromising position, we tend to feel guilty…that someone else knows about our hanky panky…to redress this situation we start to bully the witness; when in fact that person doesn’t care a biscuit what we do…..as long as we do not involve that person in our business. For the record, some people may be destitute, but they have principles….when it comes to illegal hustling, don’t ask them to participate, they won’t, and it has nothing to do with cowardice….that’s their decision, and we should respect it. Don’t try to bully that person, or you may be digging your own grave(You will be caught). Granny Pilgrim used to tell us about Quashie Pembleton who use to plant Tampi, way over John Crow Mountains. She said, when the Tampi dry, he would cut it, and roll it…then pack it into burlap bags, then wait until night to transport it to his home……in those days if the police saw you with even a little roll, you could be sure that you would be thrown in jail . Granny said during t harvest time…he waited until dusk to remove the bags from the field to his home, however while he was transporting the bags, Nana Pike,always happen to be looking out of her window, and she was able to see every move he made…but Quashie was also observing her. Granny recounted, that Nana Pike was afraid of dogs, and Quashie knew that;so one evening he took his old Rottweiler ,Bullet to the side of Nana P. house, then he called her by name, but when she opened the door to receive the visitor….Bullet the Rottweiler ,ran full speed towards her, and Quashie right behind Bullet, pretending that he was trying to get a hold of the dog….before it harm Nana P. Haay….Puppa Jezas, Granny said ,If you see how Nana P. run, and hear how she scream….you would swear that someone was butchering her, but when she got a hint that Quashie was trying to bully her because she saw too much…..she grabbed the crow bar from behind the door ,and beat Bullet to a pulp. Reportedly, Quashie had to use a wheel barrow to transport the remains of his beloved Bullet, and the next day Granny P. went up the hill to the station house to make a report about Quashie, and his activities….following the report, the police placed a surveillance trap for him, they watched him for sometime, until they had enough evidence, then they arrested him, burnt the field of Tampi, confiscated the bags he had at home, and then put him in jail. Well to end the story remember, “You should not bully, or harass people….Let sleeping dogs lie…live, and let’s live…take care of your business, and let people take care of their own.” Grandma always say, “When the lion is sleeping, never try to wake him! Also remember the proverb,” Trouble de a bush, Anancy bring it a yard.” Don’t bully people….they will return the favor.
