Great Canadian Candy Bar Countdown. #1 “Crispy - TopicsExpress

Great Canadian Candy Bar Countdown. #1 “Crispy Crunch” And so we come to number one. As many of you may have guessed, it had to be Crispy Crunch. The Judges unanimously declared the Crispy Crunch to be the top Canadian Candy Bar. And who are we to disagree? With its red-and-white, Canadian-flag-like wrapper, Crispy Crunch exudes originality and national confidence. Even its name is bold and assertive - ignoring obvious descriptors like Chocolate and Peanut and instead referring only to the candy’s texture - it IS crispy and crunchy, and that, consumers, is all you need to know. Neilson sold the first Crispy Crunch in 1930. It has been a bestseller in Canada ever since. The grateful manufacturer was quick to reward the bar’s inventor - lucky Harold Oswin received a five-dollar bonus. It may not sound much, but in those days, five dollars was enough to buy you a pair of wooden skis, or a low-end combination clock and table lamp. Crispy Crunch is truly a world-class original. (We will not discuss Butterfinger. A weak copy.) When my family first moved to Canada, I bought a Crispy Crunch in the hotel shop. It was delicious! But later, when I wanted another, I couldn’t remember the name of the bar. I thought it was something about peanuts, and sampled every bar with peanuts on cover, or a peanutty name. It was only months later that I accidentally rediscovered Crispy Crunch. It remained my favourite candy bar for many years. Sadly, my own love affair with the Crispy Crunch would end. The old Simpson’s store at Bay and King used to have a candy counter where you could buy broken Crispy Crunch bars by the bag. A quarter pound cost the same as a single wrapped Crispy Crunch bar. But one day, in 1982, I ventured too far into the pleasures of the crumbly, peanutty, taste sensation. Having missed lunch, I bought and ate a whole pound of Crispy Crunch. This overload of excellence made me feel ill. After that, Crispy Crunch was no longer my favourite. Be guided by my example, fellow Crispy Crunch lovers. Do NOT eat a whole pound of Crispy Crunch. You will go off it. And so we come to the end of The Great Canadian Candy Bar Countdown. It has been an unparalleled adventure, featuring fond recollections, bitter accusations, threats and even a dash of terrorism. And yet, in the end, our journey has brought us all closer. And perhaps that’s the greatest thing of all about Canadian candy bars - that they have helped define and unite our great nation with an ever-widening belt of chocolate and goo. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to get myself some delicious Canadian candy!* _____ *Although not really, because I’m off sugar right now.
