Great Coyote Hunt Attracts Statewide Media Coverage By Richard Morris KBIM Radio News (11/13/14) Larry’s Gun Shop of Roswell will be holding it’s third annual Great Coyote Hunt this weekend. The event has gotten the attention and criticism of animal rights advocates who spoke with TV Station KOAT in Albuquerque in a recent televised story, one of whom called it a “thrill-killing contest. State Representative Candace Spence Ezzell says the animal rights advocates should be concentrating their efforts on asking people in urban areas if their dogs or cats are missing. She says if so, it could be due to a coyote or similar predator. Ezzell says the ranching and farming community has suffered, due to livestock losses related to coyotes. “We have seen what has happened to the sheep industry in the state of New Mexico because of Coyotes and other predators , such as the mountain lion , wolf and bobcat,” she said. Wylie Maloney with Larry’s Gun Shop says the situation has affected him as well. “We have a family ranch that has been in our family for 30+ years and we used to be a sheep ranch, but we can no longer raise sheep because we were losing 20 % of our crop every year due to coyotes. We now have a cattle ranch and are still affected by coyotes,” he said. Registration at the store is from three to six this afternoon at 2708 ½ North Main. The hunt will be on Saturday and Sunday. Participants will have to be back at the Roswell store at 3 on Sunday to weigh the coyotes.
