“Great Lakes Water Safety” Class..FREE and OPEN to the public WHY? As of July 24, 2013, 302 people have drowned in the Great Lakes since 2010 WHERE: Old Art Building, 111 S. Main Street, Leland, MI 49654 WHEN: Thursday, August 1 (Rain or Shine) 6:30 p.m. Meet-N-Greet 7:00 p.m. Classroom Session 8:15 p.m. Beach & Water Session at Vans Beach RSVP : glsrp.org/classes or call Dave Benjamin, 708-903-0166 The Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project in partnership with Leland Township Parks and Rec presents the “Great Lakes Water Safety” class. The “Great Lakes Water Safety” class is FREE and OPEN to the public, surfers, police officers, fire fighters, paramedics, water rescue team members, dive team members, and Coast Guard. The class will teach participants how to: • Recognize the danger of the surf environment keeping personal safety as THE primary responsibility • Recognize the “Signs of Drowning” – How to identify a person in trouble from within a crowd. • Understand rip currents; i.e. how, where, and why rip currents occur • Use the MI Sea Grants “Flip, Float, and Follow” rip current survival strategy • Use a flotation device such as a throw ring, throw rope, rescue tube, surfboard or other objects that float to rescue a person in distress or in a rip current • React when encountering swimmers who have suffered an injury or unconscious • Enroll in lifesaving, first aid, and CPR training from accredited agencies.
