Great News from DevonWood! Update #1: DevonWood Equine Health Advisory August 4, 2014 at 8:45pm Dear Competitors of Dressage at DevonWood & Community Members: As you may have heard, DevonWood Equestrian Centre recently had a boarded horse get diagnosed with the Equine Herpes Virus. Today we received the results of subsequent testing which revealed a negative result for EHV-1, the neurological form of EHV, and confirming this case as EHV-4, the respiratory form of EHV. There has been some concern expressed by our competitors about the possibility of their exposure to EHV-4 while attending Dressage at DevonWood. Here is some important information regarding EHV and the scenario surrounding this particular case. When assessing your risk of exposure, please consider the following facts. 1) This horse did not compete and was not in any of the competition stabling areas or arenas. 2) This horse did not display any symptoms until 8/1/2014, 12 days after the last day of Dressage at DevonWood. 3) This horse did not display any respiratory symptoms until after it was already in the isolation unit of OSU for an unrelated case of colitis. We believe that it was this horses immunocompromised state that made it vulnerable to the virus. 4) This horse does not have EHV-1. It has not and continues not to display any neurological signs. If you have further concerns for the horses in your barn, it has been recommended that you take your horses temperature twice daily and watch for signs of EHV-4. Clinical signs include coughing, nasal discharge, lethargy, inappetance, conjunctivitis and uveitis. Please consult your veterinary care professional for advice on how to manage a horse you suspect may be carrying the EHV-4 virus. The rescheduling of the Region Six Youth Dressage Overnight Camp hosted by ODS and DevonWood Equestrian Centre and the ODS/Region Six Jr/Yr Team Championships is currently being discussed. Please check the ODS website for further details (oregondressage). Events that are scheduled at DevonWood Equestrian Centre in September will proceed as planned. Please feel free to contact Jessica Rattner at DevonWood Equestrian Centre if have further questions about this particular case. She can be reached by phone or text at 503-830-9944.
