Great Opportunity for Cultural Exchange! Host families needed for Chinese students July 13-25. $500 Stipend. Ms. Huangs letter below. Dear Parents, This is Zishan (Annie) Huang, the Mandarin teacher at Quarles. I hope this letter finds you well. A group of Chinese students will attend the summer enrichment classes at Dwight-Englewood School for two weeks this summer. I am wondering if you could be a host family to some of them. The students are between 12-17 years of age. They are all very friendly, interested in making American friends, and are very eager to learn about the American culture. It would be such a great opportunity for your children to practice Mandarin everyday and for the whole family to get a first-hand taste of the Chinese culture. The students will be in town from July 13 to July 25; then they will go on a trip for five days and depart for China on July 30. Families are compensated $500 for their hospitality. General requirements of host families are: • Be culturally sensitive • Provide a private, furnished bedroom (can be shared) • Provide breakfast and dinner daily • Involve students in activities • Make the students feel welcome I tried to bring this group for a joint summer camp with the children in our Mandarin program this summer but it didn’t work out. I’ll try it again next year; meanwhile, playing host to them should be an excellent opportunity to practice Chinese and to observe the differences and similarities between the two cultures. Would you please let me know if you are interested in being a host family? I can be reached at this email address annieh328@yahoo or 617-999-4811. Of course, you can always talk to me face to face at school any time. I would really appreciate it if you could also pass this letter to someone else who might be interested. I very much look forward to hearing from you. And thank you very much in advance!
