Great Prizes were allotted here. Dec 1917. Townsville West State School. The distribution of prizes took place at the Townsville West State School on the afternoon of Thursday, 13th last. The school was arranged in three divisions. The prizes of the upper school were distributed by Mr W. H. Green, of the middle school by Mr H. A. Thornton, and of the lower school by Mr T. Scrafton Browne. In addi- tion to the book prizes, eight gold medals and two very fine tennis rac- quets were awarded, the medals being presented to the school by Messrs Duf- field, Green, Scrafton Browne, Neild, Perry and Peace, and the two tennis racquets by Mr J. S Duffield. The chairman of the committee (Mr J. S. Duffield), through illness, was unable to attend, and in his absence the chair was ably filled by Mr W. H. Green. A motion was passed expressing re- gret at the absence of Mr Duffield, with the hope that he would be speedily restored to health. Presentations were made by the pupils of the upper school to Misses F. Foran and Rowen, and to Messrs Lynam, Charles, and Bergun. The following is the prize list: — Gold Medal for Arithmetic, won by Leslie George Hooper ; presented by Mr J. E. Duffield. Gold Medal for Science, won by Al- bert James Tidey; presented by Mr R. A. Nelid. Gold Medal for English, won by Ethtl May Millard; presented by Mr T. Scrafton Browne. Gold Medal for Geography, won by Alice Dorothy Morris: presented by Mr W. H. Green. Gold Medal for History, won by Ronald Roderick Schofield: presented by Mr F. Perry. Gold Medal for best bugler, won by Sydney Charles Fox, presented by Mr G. Peace. Gold Medal for best footballers, won Graham Nield (forward). Sydney C. Fox (back). Two tennis racquets, presented by Mr J. S. Duffield, for best tennis player, won by William Hair and Chloris Winks. The Milne prize, won by Leslie George Hooper presented by Mrs R. E. Milne. The Willis prize, presented by Miss Muriel Willis and Mr Charles Willis: won by Alice Morris and Leslie Hooper.
