Great comments - Al Rogat Good idea. Not going to happen with this congress..... Like · Reply · 188 · 1 hr Cindy Buss Wynboom Unfortunately, I agree. Nothing good will happen with this Congress. Their first action was to attack SSDI and some of the most vulnerable people in the U.S. I dont think that bodes well for any of us. Like · 40 · 1 hr Michelle Lee Culp They are too busy attacking a womans right to choose to give a damn about the hungry children. Like · 13 · 1 hr Leslie L. Cox Is it just me--or is does anyone else feel that this attack on Social Security is tantamount to theft? Do we not pay taxes to protect ourselves? Its also a forced deduction from our paychecks. I feel like Im being forced to just hand over even MORE money for ruthless and greedy causes... Like · 16 · 1 hr · Edited Leslie Clarke Stevens Their response is more likely to be more austerity measures, more tax cuts for the rich, a greater push for deporting undocumented immigrants, private school vouchers, requiring that teachers be armed, and continue the militarization of law enforcement. If a worker wanted the government to save a portion of their salary for retirement, the worker could contribute to the fund and at retirement, be awarded their money back, plus interest. Unfortunately, the original idea was not viable as many would refuse to save and end up broke by retirement. Or, some would contribute only when they felt the need to or when they had the extra money to do so. Therefore, S/S had to be made mandatory to insure that every working American would be afforded a retirement income. Ok... All good and well... UNTIL 20 or so years later when republicans began to notice a huge pile of money, just sitting there for the taking, or to say the least, for the borrowing. Since then its been a slush fund/ piggy bank to be robbed, er... I mean Borrowed from but never paid back to what it would amount to had it never been touched in the first place. Hence, the small increments retirees receive monthly as opposed to what they would be receiving monthly if S/S was flush with the money it should have plus would have earned in interest all these years. Like · 1 · 59 mins Mark Poirier Has the government ever paid back any money at all into the Social Security Trust? Theyve been raiding it since the reign of Saint Ronald the Senile... Like · 58 mins Mark Passarelli Sorry to ruin the narritive but it was Lydon Johnson who raided SS. A Democrat. Like · 1 · 55 mins Don Berry If we (since Vietnam) hadnt depleted the treasury coffers fighting useless wars to profit corporations and the well-connected, raiding SS would never have been necessary, Im thinking...no matter whether a Democrat or a Republican was in office.
