Great day so far: 1) Car threw a belt on the way to work, lost power steering intermittently from Research Dr. to Geography. 2) Power out at North PJ Auditorium, but instructors were not contacted. I learned my class was moved when I was 3/4 the way to the room, went to the room, saw the SIGNS that were posted--but nobody contacted the faculty affected so we could get the word out to students! 3) Had to do class in the Tate Theater, lost about 5 minutes in the process, students were nice enough to stick around 5 minutes late. Tate Theater has no desks, so taking notes means writing in your lap. One former relative of mine would accuse me of blaming others for this and having a mid-life crisis. I think instead that our infrastructure is having a mid-to-late-in-life crisis. 15-year-old cars get grouchy in cold weather. 40-to-50-year-old auditoriums fall apart. Research universities have a hard time understanding the centrality of instruction and instructors.
