Great match here in the 1984 Olympics between eventual Olympic - TopicsExpress

Great match here in the 1984 Olympics between eventual Olympic gold medalist and two-time world champion Mark Schultz (USA) and world bronze medalist Chris Rinke (CAN). And appreciate it more with Schultzs (very interesting and moving) personal insight into this match of 30 years ago, from his recent Facebook page post (https://facebook/MarkSchultzy?fref=ts): This match was so intense I intentionally avoided watching it for 30 years! Now I know why I couldnt watch it. I think this match could have given me PTSD. This was the toughest and most critically important match of my life against Olympic Bronze Medalist Chris Rinke, Canada. Not only did Chris Rinke beat me in the 1983 Pan Ams in Caracas, Venezuela, but he had the ability to get super psyched. He was a giant killer. When the pressure was on, he rose to the occasion. I never wrestled anyone who could rise so high under pressure when many great wrestlers choked. On top of all that he had my college coach sitting in his corner. Jim Humphrey (Adrienne Humphrey is his wife) knew me better than anyone. OMG I was so scared. I can barely watch this match its so intense going back to that day. If you buy my book I explain just how close I came to losing. I love Chris. Hes amazing. Chris is also one of the few people who has maintained his shape. The last point I scored I actually was planning to give up that takedown to get the officials off my back and kill the clock. After I broke the Turks arm they were looking at any excuse to throw me out of the match. Look at how hard that official is on me. But I changed my mind in a split second. It was the most critical decision I ever made in my life and it changed my life and history forever. Usually when you set-up, penetrate, and attack, your body takes over and feels its way through the finish. However this is one of the only times I mentally changed my mind and made a split second decision to attack instead of playing it safe by giving up the takedown. a year after this match I was sitting my bedroom staring at the bracket sheet on the wall and realized that had I given up that point I would have lost on tie-breaker criteria! Sitting in that room all alone coming to that realization was both strange and wonderful. I know there are people out there that hate me for having my ability and name but pleasing everyone is a sure fire way to fail. NOW AND ILL TELL YOU SOMETHING THAT WILL FREAK YOU OUT. Here is another one of the many metaphors on life that comes from wrestling. There was such a paper thin difference between Chris and I in that match it was practically non-existent. Not only were Chris and I about as close as you could get in that match but we are also about as close as you could get in life that the difference is practically non-existent. WE WERE BORN ONLY MINUTES APART ON OCTOBER 26, 1960! WHAT!!!??? Also, lets support in any way we can the upcoming critically-acclaimed movie Foxcatcher (https://facebook/FoxcatcherMovie), about Mark and his late brother Dave, who is likewise an Olympic and world wrestling champion. (Hope the movie gets to be shown in major cinemas here in the Philippines.) #MarkSchultz #Foxcatcher #1984Olympics #UnitedWorldWrestling #OlympicWrestling * * * In the Philippines, the Olympic sport of wrestling (largely due to the leadership of the United World Wrestling-recognized WAP officers) is now part of the Palarong Pambansa; the Philippine Sports Commissions Batang Pinoy, Philippine National Games, and Women Martial Arts Festival; INC Unity Games; and Ultimate Challenge multi-combat sport and fitness event.
