Great morning! The #ALS icewater bucket challenge is a story a lot of people should be paying attention to especially if you are in marketing. The challenge was started by friends of a Boston College athlete who was diagnosed with the disease. They started posting videos of themselves pouring icewater on people in support of #ALS. The foundation reported this morning that as a result of these challenges going viral they have received over $48 million in donations from 739,000 new donors vs. $2 million in donations in the same period last year. The teaching point here is the success in how things are shared via social media and the ingredients that make for such a huge success story. People typically share things that strike a chord within, and they love to participate in things that their friends, family, and colleagues participate in. There are a lot of causes out there but it is the involvement and connection that was created by the act of doing something fun and engaging that caused the dollars to roll in at an unprecedented pace.
