Great news on the continuing work of the Conservation & Management Plan for Athenry. In 2007, Galway County Council commissioned a Conservation & Management Plan for the town with funding assistance from the Irish Walled Towns Network. This project has continued with five subsequent phases of conservation works overseen by Howley Hayes Architects and funded by the IWTN and Galway County Council. The eastern section of the town wall stretches 400m from the priory to the south east tower and is prominent on the main approach road to the town from the new motorway. In 2012, an initial phase of conservation repairs were undertaken where large gaps in the wall caused by ivy growth were repaired. The walls have been repaired using traditional techniques; lime mortar and stones salvaged from where they fell at the base of the wall. In 2013, a further phase of works obtained grant assistance from the IWTN, with matching funds from Galway Co. Co. for the completion of works to this long section of wall. Paul Mulcair Ltd. have been appointed the main contractor for the project, which will involve further consolidation of collapsed sections of the wall and new cappings installed along its length. The works are due to be complete by December 2013.
