Great news that NZ has been voted into the Security Council with an overwhelming 145 votes out of 193. That was way ahead of Turkey or of Spain the other country that eventually won the other slot. The real work begins now - weve campaigned on being good listeners and a country willing to make decisions independently based on the merit of the argument, rather than to curry favour with larger states. We also said that wed stand up for smaller states. We need to ensure we stick to what we said. But that might mean making tough calls for example where a decision we take adversely impacts our large trading partners. And, we are coming on to the Council at a difficult - a hugely challenging time to influence peace in the world. Congratulations to the MFAT team, the people such as Jim McClay and the NZ mission in New York and the governments hard work too, spearheaded by Murray McCully.
