Great news: the Pinzón tortoise team has reported an overall population estimate of more than 500 tortoises on the island -- nearly triple the population from 1959, when the Galapagos National Park was established! Dr. James Gibbs of SUNY-ESF writes: This welcome change, after centuries of exploitation, is a direct result of the successful captive rearing and repatriation program and the elimination of introduced rats. Read more about what Dr. Gibbs and his team found on Pinzón, including many young tortoise hatchlings, vermilion flycatchers, and even relics from the pirate/whaler era: bit.ly/1v0JpIm.
