Great parable here. A parable is an earthly story with a heavenly meaning. The Pharisees were religious men who were very self righteous. They wore the right garb, spoke the write spiritual language and attended the proper appointed times of worship. The publicans and sinners were the smut of the day. They indulged in wicked open sin. Notice Jesus associates righteous and just persons to the Pharisees. Though they were religious there were many sins being done behind closed doors. The Pharisees were Self righteous. They had obtained a righteousness of their own not of God. The publicans and sinners knew they were sinners. They saw their corrupt nature and they were seeking Jesus for a solution. What a tragedy for the Pharisees! We see this in our day. Men are so prone to believe their so called good deeds will merit Gods favor on judgment day. Not so, the righteousness of Christ is the only hope for man. We must come to God through Christ for the righteousness that God requires. Cast yourself upon the mercy of God in Christ. Dont go on another minute believing God will justify you in His courtroom because of your works. Repent and believe the gospel!! Then drew near unto him all the publicans and sinners for to hear him. And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them. And he spake this parable unto them, saying, What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it? And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he cometh home, he calleth together his friends and neighbours, saying unto them, Rejoice with me; for I have found my sheep which was lost. I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance. (Luke 15:1-7 KJV)
