Great piece. However, neither Europe or the U.S. will have anything more than token influence in the region given the powers surrounding the various Stans. So the choice for the region is likely to boil down to a tilt towards the Bear or the Dragon. We may not like such a binary choice, but if needed, given Russias relative weakness and Chinas relative strength, geopolitics 101 would inform us to hope for a tilt to Russia IF Russia were not aligning with China. Of course, our neo-Cold War with Russia is, as I often comment, exactly what is happening. Where is our smart diplomacy?
