Great talk by a recent new acquaintance. Ive never given - TopicsExpress

Great talk by a recent new acquaintance. Ive never given meditation a serious try, and if I ever do, I definitely will not be doing the lotus position. :> Still, very interesting story, and one that I think is pretty common to our generation: many of us, raised free, if not of religion then at least of excessive religious indoctrination (Ali has a very different perspective on that front than me, for obvious reasons, though we appear to have found ourselves at the same conclusions nonetheless), are now engaged in a very serious quest for some form of semi-solid meaning (in much the same way that science is the best road to truth, but still makes no claims to have found it) to replace the now-outmoded one that our ancestors relied on before the Enlightenment and all that it unleashed. Pandoras Care Package. One conclusion Ive reached, in recent years, is that just as religions have a tendency to recycle the useful stuff from previous religions, so should we be looking to harvest the stuff that is still useful from religion-as-humans-have-practiced-it. And there were and are many, many useful practices that we really should be paying a lot more attention to, meditation among these, but also the monastic lifestyle of solitude, study and reflection, asceticism, mindful labour, and others. But these are not easy things to do, particularly when walking through a circus of excess that never leaves town. Here, then, is a story of one such successful reclamation.
