Great to join Treasurer Tim Nicholls this afternoon to announce we will tackle congestion at the Cairns Airport turnoff with a $6 million upgrade! ANNOUNCEMENT: LNP to improve access to Cairns Airport A major traffic headache outside the Cairns Airport will be fixed with an upgrade of the Airport Avenue intersection if the LNP is re-elected. Treasurer Tim Nicholls said the upgrade would deliver a second right-hand turning lane from the Captain Cook Highway, alleviating kilometres of traffic congestion for drivers. “This is a $6 million project which will transform access around the Cairns airport, making it easier for locals and visitors alike to get to their flights on time, while surrounding traffic can still flow freely,” Mr Nicholls said. “We want regional Queensland to continue to grow and after listening to locals, we understand a strong plan is needed along with investment in infrastructure. “Only the Newman LNP government has a plan to further unlock Cairns’ potential, easing congestion and improving travel for motorists which means less time stuck in traffic and more time spent with the family.” Member for Barron River Michael Trout said the LNP was getting on with the job of fixing an area that has been causing locals frustration for some time. “More than 38,000 vehicles a day move through this intersection, and often in peak periods traffic will stretch as far back as the Holloway’s Beach roundabout, with cars queuing to turn into the airport,” Mr Trout said. “This upgrade means any push to increase visitors to Cairns airport is now matched with appropriate infrastructure to ensure our traffic system can cope with added vehicles. Member for Cairns Gavin King said the upgrade project was vital for local residents, businesses and the Cairns community. “Unlike Labor, the Newman LNP Government is a strong team with a strong plan to build better roads for rural and regional Queensland ensuring a brighter future,” Mr King said. “While an LNP Government is taking action to deliver job-creating infrastructure, we are also fixing Labor’s legacy of debt to ensure these vital projects can be delivered.”
