Great to know... Dear Businesses: Over the last several weeks, the Short North Alliance Ambassador team has noticed an increase in panhandling along High Street south of Starr Avenue throughout the district. First, we wanted to let you all know that we are aware of the issue and are actively working with Columbus Police to work toward solutions. The group that we have been observing recently appears to be working together in a coordinated way in the district. They hold cardboard signs, tend to not approach the public aggressively, and rotate spaces frequently. Second, we wanted to send a reminder to you for you to communicate with your staff, customers, or other constituents, that giving to panhandlers exacerbates the problem. Our team has observed people giving money to them quite a bit. Please share that the Short North Alliance works to help link those who are in need, homeless, or otherwise on the street to services to address food, shelter, addiction, and other social services. By not giving panhandlers money, you are not failing to be compassionate. Finally, if you, a staff member, or a customer encounters a panhandler that is being aggressive, is disrupting your businesses or is otherwise being a nuisance, please do not hesitate to contact the Short North Ambassador hot line at 614-636-5100. We will get out there as soon as we can to address the issue. Thanks so much and I look forward to meeting many of you next week at our district meetings! Best regards, Betsy A.
