Great to see we have interest in our small challenge.......A few interesting facts about Paleo What is Paleo? Paleo; short for Paleolithic As In Caveman! When you take a look in the mirror, what you see before you is... the most complex machine on the face of this planet! • This complicated machine, your body, still thinks that youre living the existence of our ancestors. • As far as your body is concerned, you might as well still be running around in leopard skin pants! • This is precisely the reason we find it easy to store fat and find it difficult to lose; SURVIVAL! With all this in mind let’s for a moment take a look at what common sense tells us about where we should start to look at what food is best for us to eat Surely a good place to start would be the types of foods that we have eaten for the longest period of time! • Foods that we evolved to eat • The foods that we foraged, gathered and hunted • Meat • Fish • Fowl • Vegetables • Some Fruits • Some Roots • Some Tubers • Nuts & Seeds Conversely... We can take a look at foods which will have a detrimental effect on our physiology and ultimately our health. They could be the foods that have been introduced more recently! To name some simply... • Bread • Pasta • Cereals • Sugar • Processed Foods • Sweeteners • Pesticides/Herbicides/Toxins • 2.5 million years ago our first truly ‘human’ ancestors began to emerge • 10,000 years ago, very recently in fact, our forefathers began to work with agriculture and the consumption of grain. • Another 5000 we started keeping animals and drinking their milk! BUT what this means is that for the vast majority of our time on the planet we lived solely on what we could hunt and what we could gather. The Paleo diet would have varied in its ratio of plant to animal consumption based on where in the world we lived, but nevertheless we were omnivores and ate what we could find or kill. Eating in a Paleolithic way allows us to eat the same way every single person did prior to the development of agriculture… only 500 generations ago! Foods of Paleolithic man, are high in antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, essential fats, low GI carbohydrates and soluble fibre; ALL the things which promote optimum health, vitality and performance. On the other hand… Eating paleo ensures a diet low in the foods which may cause: obesity, diabetes, hypertension, atherosclerosis, high cholesterol, tiredness, lethargy & depression to name a few…
