Great to take a phone call late this arvo from a stoked John Skinner. Won the Australian 55s Longboard Title today.Several years of trying ..it finally came. Johhny described paddeling his guts out to get back outside after being last and ,having only 7 minutes left. His next wave was the highest score of the final and set him up if he could get back out for another. Never hurt so much in my life,putting in a big effort to make it out for one last try. Needing a 4.5 a regulation" good" ride for surfers of this standard,the clock ticked away and no waves came.Only 90 seconds left and his main rival snuck one underneath him and he was left with no choice but to take whatever came.Glen Mahoney ,the past champ and surfer that spoiled so many of Skindogs previous attempts missed the takeoff and scored low, Johns last gasp wave stood up and Skindog bravely charged to the nose for a fast risky manouver and then milked the slowing break all the way to shore,finishing with his trademark "switchfoot signoff to score a 6 + from the judges. Convincing win against the best 55yr longboarders in the country.Johnny is so pumped ..Big celebration tonite . 4 Aust titles shared with his housemates. They are hiring a private bus and driver and heading for a big nite at the Haven Bowlo and local pubs.Congrats to John well done mate. Proof that you should never give up !
