Greater Manchester Winter Games On Tuesday 1st April Redwood attending the winter school games event providing 25 young people from across all age ranges throughout the school to compete. The event began at the Regional Athletics Stadium at Sportcity for the opening ceremony hosted by Stu Tolan from Key103. The opening ceremony had performances by school bands and cheerleaders before a special show Britain’s Got Talent finalists The Mend. Following this, the games were officially opened with a countdown before each sport departed for their individual event locations. Sixth form students Kyle, Fahad, Tommy D, Tom S, Tom N, Mark, Jordan, Raymond, Brandon and Ian represented the school at the U19’s tag rugby event at Broughton Park, hoping to bring back a medal for the third year in a row. The team played four games in a round robin league format, winning 3 and losing 1. This meant that the team narrowly missed on the gold medal but nonetheless a very respectable silver medal. Michael and Phil reported that the whole team played brilliantly together and it was difficult to pick out a star performer. Michael even treated the boys to ice creams on the way home! Robert, Luke, Callum C, Dwayne and Chris from KS3 and Aaron and Sheraz from KS4 represented the school at the U16’s rugby event. The team went into the event with little practice and not too much experience and therefore were always going to struggle against bigger and faster teams with more experience than themselves. However, every player entered into each game with lots of enthusiasm and determination scoring some good tries along the way. Robert, Luke and Sheraz in particular showed fantastic promise which should hold the team in good stead for further competitions. Although the team didn’t gain a medal they certainly did themselves proud. Over at the Aquatics centre Chelsea, Sabrina, Ryan, Ubaid, Lewis, Frank, Patrick and Saleem from KS3 formed Redwood’s swimming team. Mr Jackson commented that although there was a lot of waiting around all our young people remained patient and focussed before performing brilliantly. Saleem received a special mention for his fantastic swim and as a team the school won the silver medal. Well done guys!!!! Overall a fantastic effort for each and every one of our young people who represented the school with maturity and enthusiasm. Each student returned to school with a big smile on their faces, proud of what they had achieved. A sentiment echoed by all the staff in attendance. Well done!!! Gary Oliver, Winter Games Report On Tuesday 1st April, year 11 student Gary Oliver was invited to the Greater Manchester winter games at SportCity to address the VIP section of the opening ceremony. Gary began by explaining what sport and particularly sport at Redwood has done for him. He described how through participation he has become healthier and fitter with improved confidence and increased life skills. After his speech Gary was approached by Rochdale mayor and Peter Rush who praised Gary on how inspirational his speech was. Over 2000 young people participated in games and Gary was chosen to inspire VIPs. He then went on the tour of the games experiencing behind the scenes and swapping stories with the VIPs, which included four athletes on a talent pathway to represent their country at the Olympics in 2018. This was a fantastic achievement by one of our young ambassadors and he represented himself and the school in a fantastic manner. Gary described the experience as one of the best days of his life and was immensely proud of himself. Well done!!!
