Greater New Jersey Annual Conference Bishop Schol responds on Facebook to the verdict in the Trayvon Martin case: "Not guilty. I am not surprised. A 17 year old on his way home is shot and killed and the verdict is not guilty. I am not surprised that an unarmed 17 year old on his way home is shot and killed and the verdict is not guilty. I am not surprised that an unarmed 17 year old African American on his way home is shot and killed and the verdict is not guilty. I am not surprised that our justice system is ill equipped to root out evil and to uncover racism in our culture. What surprises me is that in many of our white churches there will not be any mention of injustice and the sting of racism. There will be prayers for peace and calls for calm but no call to end racism. When will we understand there is no peace and no justice as long as we allow racism. Are we the church of Jesus Christ if we worship today and not say a word that an injustice has occurred? An unarmed 17 year old African American young person was killed on his way home and many white churches will not say a mumbling word. I am reminded of the him, Were you there when they crucified my Lord?"
