Greater Philly, PA - Longview Farm Seeking Apprentices The Longview Center for Agriculture is looking for three apprentices to join our crew of seven. Located in Collegeville, PA (about 45 minutes outside the Philadelphia), the farm is located on 120 acres of preserved farmland and serves a 300-member CSA as well as various farmers markets and wholesale accounts throughout the region. We primarily grow organically on 15 acres of mixed vegetable crops, along with 2 acres in strawberries and another 5 acres in orchards. Longviews apprenticeship is a 2-year program that is designed as a fast-track to farm management. Longview also participates in Tri-State CRAFT - semi weekly field trips to different farms throughout the region to learn about different systems that each farmer has implemented. On-farm classroom education by the managers is also provided weekly. Apprentices are expected to work M-F, 7am-5pm at the height of the season (8-4 in spring/fall), with occasional weekend days in all weather conditions. The apprenticeship begins in Mar/Apr until mid-November, with opportunity for winter work. Compensation is $1000/month and includes housing (with utilities and internet), as well as fresh produce and gleaning rights. There is also a 6-month commitment for those unable to work the full season. Responsibilities include tractor operation, weeding, hand-scale agriculture, transplanting, irrigation set-up and management, greenhouse upkeep and propagation, harvest,farmers markets, etc. While prior experience in certainly welcomed, we are a teaching farm that is looking for the right, motivated individuals who want to start a career in organic farming.
