Greatness in God’s eyes is displayed in terms of service. #humility LEM Daily #Devotion Series: #Philippians Philippians 2:25 “I have thought it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus my brother and fellow worker and fellow soldier, and your messenger and minister to my need.” We know little about this man Epaphroditus from biblical accounts, but we can ascertain pieces of his character from this brief description in Paul’s letter to the Philippian church, a description that underlines Paul’s holding him up along with Timothy as an example of humble Christian service. Paul calls Epaphroditus his “brother,” using a term in Greek that meant more than just spiritual brothers. It carried with it a feeling of camaraderie, affection, and friendship. Epaphroditus was very special to Paul and they had a very close relationship. Secondly, Paul called him his “fellow worker.” Here the apostle is stressing Epaphroditus’ laboring alongside of him in the work of Christ. This close brother was also a close and equal laborer. Then Paul refers to him as a “fellow soldier,” which was a very honorable title. This same reference was made in Greek culture to honor a common soldier as equal to the commander-in-chief or to the general. Basically, Paul was lifting Epaphroditus up to the Philippians as equal to himself in their mutual battle against a spiritual adversary. Indeed, this was a unique and amazing man. And yet with all of these truly inspiring characteristics, Epaphroditus was a “messenger” and a “minister” to Paul’s needs. He was, quite simply, a humble servant. How complete is this picture of Christian servitude from a man who could have seen reason to elevate himself given his nature and qualities, but who instead chose a life of service to his Christian brothers and sisters. We should indeed take much from this example and live our lives with this kind of attitude. Study/Meditation: What are some practical implications you can take from this description of Epaphroditus about how you must live your own life? *Father, give me a heart to serve like that of Epaphroditus. Help me see the areas where I can improve and the places where I must step out and serve like this. Amen.
