Greek Government ERT Crisis Its looks like tomorrow at 7.30 pm in Athens there will be a leader’s meeting between PM Samaras, Pasok’s Venizelos and Dhm.Ar.’s Kouvelis. So far there seems to be bad blood between them, and the two smaller parties rejected New Democracy’s compromise of keeping a skeleton staff at ERT for news broadcast. Moreover, the constitutional court will decide by Tuesday on a temporary order of whether to keep ERT operations afloat or justify the government’s closing order. If they do decide that, everyone at ERT goes back to work due to the legal decision to freeze its closure. But the political scene is just as unforeseeable. Unfortunately without the two smaller parties support, PM Samaras cannot survive a vote of confidence, as is likely to be proposed by SYRIZA. If the President Papoulias hands a mandate to different parties it is unlikely to provide a majority party consensus. And if we go to elections no party can win an independent majority and will need coalitions, once again. It will also threaten the Troika financing for the state and the political uncertainty could derail the important tourism industry sector. Let’s hope for a realistic and balance solution in Athens on Monday … or we have two rounds of national elections that will derail reform s, financing and national stability. Note however, that because PM Samaras did not discuss this issue the two other party leaders there is some bad feeling and no one knows how long this shaky and volatile coalition government can survive.
