Greeley Fire Dept. Receives Foam Trailer Donation, Conducts Training The Greeley Fire Department has received a donation of a fire fighting foam trailer from Mineral Resources, Inc. of Greeley. The trailer has been provided to the Greeley Fire Department to assist in suppressing potential flammable and or combustible liquids fires in the community at oil and gas sites well as transportation related emergency incidents. During the week of July 28th, all Greeley Fire Department response personnel were trained to use the new piece of equipment. The unit consists of two 270 gallon firefighting foam tanks mounted onto a trailer that is equipped with piping mounted to a movable nozzle. Fire crews will be able to apply 18,000 gallons of finished foam product continuously for approximately 35 minutes, exponentially enhancing current foam application capabilities. During the training session in a dirt lot at Island Grove Park, fire crews were able to use 270 gallons of firefighting foam, which had been donated by Western States Fire Protection of Ft. Collins, CO. The foam donation provided crews with realistic training in the behavioral characteristics of foam application. During a flammable/combustible liquids fire incident within the Greeley Fire Department’s response area, initial responding engine companies will identify the need and call for the trailer to respond. While it’s responding, the units on scene will hold the fire in “check’ with water application to surrounding objects, and simultaneously protect /rescue any people threatened and initiate an evacuation if necessary. They will apply water (from water carried on the engines and/or establish a water supply from hydrants or tanker trucks) to anything threatened by the burning flammable or combustible liquids, keeping nearby objects cool and confining burning liquids. Once the foam unit arrives, the actual application of foam onto the burning flammable/combustible liquid would take place to actually extinguish the fire. This donation will provide Greeley Fire with more tools to carry out our mission- To prevent harm through professional, compassionate service.
