Green Cemeteries? A Blog by Conservationeconomic Green Cemeteries and Land ConservationGreen cemeteries: a new trend or back to basics? What is a green cemetery or a green burial? In today’s definition a Green Burial does not use toxic formaldehyde-based embalming fluids, metal caskets, concrete liners or vaults. A Green Cemetery is one that strives to create a setting where a person can be put to rest in surroundings that are as close to a natural ecological system as possible. Combining a green cemetery and green burial can be described as ecologically sustainable death care. How can this bring about the preservation of open space and natural areas? If you think of the death care process and go back in time a very short period you would find that preserving open space, developing a green cemetery and performing a green burial was the norm. Traditionally land was set aside for the burial of the dead. This land was often considered scarred and could not be used for other purposes, therefore preserved for burial purposes. Nowadays for profit and non profit organizations are establishing green cemeteries that are protected in perpetuity as open space. The preparation of the body, until embalming came into use, was normally done by friends and family with no chemicals or embalming fluids; a body devoid of dangerous chemicals; is an ecologically sustainable body that can decompose without adding any hazardous material to the environment. The burial was often in a shroud or simple pine box. No metal or concrete that had to be manufactured and transported to the site. Therefore a much smaller and more sustainable impact on the environment. Green cemeteries, green burials and land conservation; combined they bring a healthier and more sustainable approach to the loss of a loved one.
