Green County shot 67 percent in Friday’s Campbellsville Holiday Classic semifinal game but couldn’t overcome 23 turnovers and poor free throw shooting and fell 61-56 to Louisville Holy Cross. The Dragons made 20-of-30 from the floor, including 4-of-6 from three point range, but 11 third quarter turnovers allowed Holy Cross (6-2) to rally from a nine-point halftime deficit to take the lead late in the third quarter on a three-pointer by Jack Schmidt. The Cougars, which forced the action in the third period with a full court press that stymied the Dragons, would never relinquish that lead as GCHS struggled at the free throw line and continued to make turnovers. GCHS (3-5) shot 8-of-23 from the charity stripe. Holy Cross was 15-21. Holy Cross protected the ball, making just three second half turnovers and nine for the game. Things started well for the Dragons as they made six of their first seven field goal attempts. Their transition game clicked early and they built a nine point lead in the first quarter and withstood a Holy Cross second quarter run to maintain that advantage at the half. At the start of the third quarter, however, things fell apart as GCHS turned the ball over on eight of their first 10 offensive possessions. The Dragons showed a marked improvement from a preseason scrimmage last month against Holy Cross where GCHS lost by 30. The Dragons’ Colton Bush made five of his six three-point attempts en route to a game high 23 points. Dominique Compton added 12 before fouling out and Levi Murphy added 10. Dominque Mack led Holy Cross with 22 points. Holy Cross moves into Saturday’s championship game against East Jessamine, The Dragons will play Warren East in the third place game with tipoff scheduled for 6 p.m. EST at Campbellsville High School.
