Tue 27 Jan 2015 Reef Hour - Election Special, lunchtime event Salt House, Marina Point 12:30hrs – 13:30hrs Cairns and Far North Environment Centre (CAFNEC) is today announcing a very important event in the lead up to the State election. The Reef Hour – Election Special event will feature political candidates discussing their positions on issues relevant to the protection of the Great Barrier Reef. CAFNEC is extending an invitation to media to attend the event and will be available for interviews today and in the lead up to the event. Who: Michael Trout MP (LNP), Rob Pyne (Labour candidate), Noel Castley-Wright (Greens candidate) What: Introduction to the issues from CAFNEC, Short talks from candidates, Q&A. Opportunities for media interviews after the event. Free to attend. 2 for 1 bar meals available from 12 noon. CAFNEC Marine Programs Coordinator Josh Coates said: “We are continuing our very successful Reef hour event series with an ‘Election Special’ in the week before Queenslanders go to the polls. The protection of the Great Barrier Reef is a crucial election issue and this event is an opportunity for candidates to clearly articulate their position on a range of issues in relation to reef protection. “We are actively encouraging Far North Queenslanders to ‘vote for the reef’ this election and as part of that we are giving the politicians the chance to outline and defend their policies. “Issues discussed will include the Cairns Port dredging proposal, the development of the Reef 2050 plan and the threat of ‘World Heritage in Danger’ listing, coastal development, land based impacts such as agricultural runoff , fisheries management, protection of vulnerable species such as dugong and turtle and the issue of climate change impact on the reef. “The reef is clearly the highest profile environmental issue this election and reef health is extra important to us in the Far North. We expect a very informative session, interesting questions and a great opportunity for the community to hear directly from the local candidates and for media to report the positions of the parties in relation to the reef and FNQ.” Facebook: https://facebook/CAFNEC Media contact: Josh Coates, Marine Programs Coordinator, (07) 4032 1586, 0438 805 284, [email protected] . . . . Tue 27 Jan 2015 The 2015 Cook Electorate Pre-Election Forum 7pm Mareeba Sports & Recreation Club (formerly Mareeba Bowls Club) With..Mareeba Chamber of Commerce 2015 Corporate Partners For more information contact the Mareeba Chamber on 4092 6050 or [email protected] Presented by Mareeba Chamber of Commerce. In the Cook electorate our grazing and agricultural industries are threatened by CSG. Contaminates have been found in stock in CSG production areas such as Kingaroy. In some places stock are not allowed access to dams and stock in paddock must be on clean feed for 60 days before they can go to slaughter. Overseas, fracking water has killed cattle outright and damaged reproductive capabilities. Landowners rights to object to mining have been slashed and water reforms give mining unfettered use of our water resources including the Great Artesian Basin. Since 2002, a current proposal/application for an Authority to Prospect (ATP) exploration permit (ATP 718) for coal seam gas at Mt Mulligan has been with the State (DNRM) for assessment. For anyone who believes they have been informed otherwise, this can be verified by calling the Mareeba mining office - 4048 4785. At the Community Cabinet held in Mareeba recently CSG Free NQ Inc. members including Djungan Elder Percy Neil felt that ardent pleas by the Djungan people to Minister Cripps (ENV) not to grant this permit fell on deaf ears. Nor did the Director General of DNRM, Dr Brett Hayward, give the group any assurances that the cultural and environmental threats to Mt Mulligan were cause enough to put the 12 year old ATP 718 to sleep forever. ATP 718 remains an active application with the Mining Minister, Mr Cripps. Yet, our local LNP member David Kempton confuses this issue when he states “there is no coal seam gas mining conventional/unconventional proposed for MT Mulligan or anywhere in Cook electorate” and “will not comment any further on hypothetical’s”. The 6 candidates for Cook were each asked to respond to the following statement and state their policy. “Unconventional gas mining in Queensland, specifically at Mt Mulligan, with the potential impacts on the quality of water in aquifers, streams, the Gulf and the Great Barrier Reef, chemical toxicity, health, depletion of water reserves as well as potential impacts on communities landholders, heritage, and cultural values, tourism, fishing and prawn industries”. Candidate responses: Katter’s Australian Party candidate Lee Marriott “I oppose CSG in all forms and did so before joining the Katter’s Australian Party. My party share my view and has made opposition to CSG a core policy. I believe that the potential long term damage to our water aquifers, farmlands and to the reef is not worth the gamble. Aside from the environmental damge I believe CSG is exploitation of our coal resource and once installed it does not provide enough long term jobs to be beneficial to the community. I have witnessed CSG extraction first hand at both Moranbah and Emerald”. Australian Labor party candidate Billy Gordon: No response Independent candidate Michaelangelo Newie: No response Liberal National Party David Kempton: “There is no coal seam gas mining conventional/unconventional proposed for Mt Mulligan or anywhere in Cook electorate. In the event there is an application then it will be dealt with in the appropriate manner, taking into account considerations such as environmental impact, employment prospects, native title considerations, social impacts and landholder consent. I will make my decision upon any such application being made and will not comment any further on hypothetical’s. There are many real and pressing issues I am far more concerned with”. Queensland Greens candidate Darryl Desjardin; “The Greens believe that Coal Seam Gas (CSG) is not a clean transition fuel because of the future potential for fugitive methane emmisssions associated with extraction and distribution. CSG may prove to be more damaging to the climate than coal. The modern mining sector is capital intensive compared to other sectors of the economy. A switch in investment to renewable energy will generate substantially more jobs than are currently available in the fossil fuel sector. The Greens oppose coal seam gas exploration and production and associated pipeline and export:. . . . . Fri 20 Mar – Mon 24 Mar 2015 “Getting to the Heart of Permaculture Design” Course at Hill Top Farm, Cooktown Course outline - Permaculture at its heart is a design process, where the main focus is creating more sustainable systems. This course provides participants with a toolkit of the Key Ecological Practices we have developed to mimic the functions and processes of healthy natural ecosystems. Nature has had millions of years to fine tune the design of sustainable systems. It therefore makes sense to tap into nature’s wisdom in designing more sustainable homes, gardens and farms, as well as communities and businesses. The toolkit provides a simple and logical framework for sustainable design and decision-making whatever your climate and venture. Sun 31 May 2015 Cairns Eco-Fiesta (formerly Sustainable Living Expo) Cruise Liner Terminal and adjacent parkland We have been busily planning for the 2015 Sustainable Living Expo and have some exciting news to share! Council has partnered with James Cook University to align the 2015 Expo with the JCU Sustainability Symposium – that is, to have two complementary events in the same week. Townsville Council is following suit, partnering with their JCU campus to align their Council’s annual environmental festival with the JCU symposium, which is run concurrently at both campuses. The aim of these partnerships is to create a platform for a regional ‘Eco-Week’, where Councils, JCU, schools, TAFE, community / environment groups, businesses and individual community members hold their own new or existing event / activity during Eco-Week (29 May to 7 June) to benefit from cross promotion and wider media exposure. The Sustainable Living Expo will now be called ‘Eco-Fiesta’ to align with the Townsville event and better reflect the event message of – planet, people, prosperity. The new name is also a nod to CAFNEC’s Enviro-Fiesta from yester-year. The Cairns Eco-Fiesta will be held on Sunday 31 May 2015 at the Cruise Liner Terminal and adjacent parkland – this venue combines the best of both worlds – indoor exhibition space for businesses and outdoor ‘festival’ space where event attendees can enjoy a day out in a relaxed atmosphere. We believe this collaborative approach to align sustainability events across the region will create many synergies, including widening the appeal of individual events. We are writing to highlight the ‘Eco-week’ concept and to invite you to think about how your organisation might like to participate in this collaborative model by holding your own event during Eco-Week. So if you like the idea, please get in touch so we know what your thoughts are and can plan accordingly. The green edge of the business community is also welcome to participate either by having a stall at the Eco-Fiesta, using the week as a platform to promote their green credentials, fundraise for an eco-cause or anything else that makes a positive contribution to the week. We are still in the early planning stages and welcome any input to make Eco-Week and the Eco-Fiesta the premier sustainability event in regional Australia. Please contact one of the team at any time. It’s going to be a big job to bring it all together but we’re really positive about where this can go. Stay tuned for more updates early in the New Year.
