Green Party get 16% of the vote and zero councillors.... I live in the constituency of Camberwell & Peckham which is one of the 2.5 constituencies making up the Borough of Southwark. In the recent local elections Labour won every single last one of the 27 councillors representing the constituency on 66% of the vote. The Greens amazingly came second across the constituency with their total equaling the combined votes of the Lib Dems and Tories. This is quite a change from when I stood as a Lib Dem parliamentary candidate many years ago when I came second to Harriet Harman. The Green vote has really heartened me, as I have been battling away on Green issues locally for over two decades and feeling like I was a member of a tiny minority who cared. This result however demonstrates the urgency of getting the Single Transferable Vote Proportional Voting System in place for local government. It really is not acceptable that the entire constituency has no democratic opposition spokesperson. One party states are never any good for anyone. The Lib Dems would be making a very positive contribution if at the next general election they made clear genuine PR for local government was a red line negotiating issue for them.
