Green Power to the People! As part of national Public Power Week, Lansing Board of Water and Light is holding an Open House on Wednesday, October 9 from 3 pm to 7 pm at its newly completed $182 million REO Town power plant and headquarters. This is a rare opportunity to tour the first new power plant built in Michigan in 25 years and which will generate over 100 megawatts of power, representing 20% of the Lansing area’s requirements and also providing steam for the nearby Cadillac assembly plant and most of the State office buildings in the downtown Capital area. It replaces the old plant that burned 350,000 tons of coal annually with new, clean-burning natural gas generators, and is among the cleanest, greenest facilities in the U.S. The Plant and restored Depot Building are located at 1201 S Washington in the REO Town section of Lansing where Ransom Eli Olds built his “REO Speedwagons” in the 1920s. Christman is proud to have served BWL as major construction manager on the project, including work by Christman Constructors, Inc. in restoring the 110-year old Grand Trunk railroad station as well as all of the concrete work on the site. The event is open to the public and families are welcome to attend.
