Greenbrier Ghost...This is a local story we have featured several times on this site.- Mike From: Whispers Beyond The Grave The Greenbrier Ghost was Elva Zona Heaster-Shue, a local woman from Greenbrier County, West Virginia, who was found dead on January 23, 1897. The coroner listed the cause of her death as everlasting faint and then as childbirth. According to local legend, Elva appeared to her mother in a dream four weeks after the funeral. She said that Shue (her blacksmith husband) was a cruel man who abused her, and who had attacked her in a fit of rage when he believed that she had cooked no meat for dinner. He had broken her neck; to prove this, the ghost turned her head completely around until it was facing backwards. Supposedly, the ghost appeared first as a bright light, gradually taking form and filling the room with a chill. She is said to have visited Mrs. Heaster over the course of four nights. Her mom was finally convinced and went to the local prosecutor with the story. The prosecutor had Elva dug up and an autopsy was performed. The results showed she had a broken neck and crushed windpipe. Edward Shue was tried, convicted, and shipped to the West Virginia State Penitentiary, where murderers of women dont expect to live long, and he didnt. The historical marker notes that this was the Only known case in which testimony from a ghost helped convict a murderer.
