"Greenpeace has called the piracy charges “absurd” and decried - TopicsExpress

"Greenpeace has called the piracy charges “absurd” and decried the decision to hold activists in pre-trial detention as an intimidation tactic." The UN disagrees. "Article 101 of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea defines piracy as: (a) any illegal acts of violence or detention, or any act of depredation, committed for private ends by the crew or the passengers of a private ship or a private aircraft, and directed: (i) on the high seas, against another ship or aircraft, or against persons or property on board such ship or aircraft; (ii) against a ship, aircraft, persons or property in a place outside the jurisdiction of any State; (b) any act of voluntary participation in the operation of a ship or of an aircraft with knowledge of facts making it a pirate ship or aircraft;" "“The Russian authorities are trying to scare people who stand up to the oil industry in the Arctic, but this blatant intimidation will not succeed,” Greenpeace International executive director Kumi Naidoo said." Yes, the idea of the law is to scare people into acceptable behaviour. "Investigators called for all 30 activists to be placed in pre-trial detention, arguing they could flee abroad or go into hiding." Again, logic. independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/russian-court-denies-bail-to-greenpeace-oil-rig-protesters-8842394.html
