Greensboro, NC- Laurrissa Armstrong, the 62-year-old Welborn schoolteacher who was shot by her husband on Aug. 29, died from her wounds Saturday afternoon, according to Greensboro city officials. Armstrong was shot multiple times by her husband shortly before 8 a.m. in front of her apartment at 1404 Adams Farm Parkway in Greensboro. She was transported to Moses Cone Hospital where she remained in critical condition until her death. Less than three hours after the shooting, her husband, Bruce Ray Armstrong, 61, was discovered unresponsive in a rented vehicle in a parking lot at 1703 South Forty Drive. He was transported to Moses Cone Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The cause of his death wasn’t apparent at the time, according to Greensboro officials. Police are awaiting a medical examiner’s report to determine the manner of death. Armstrong’s friends in the Guilford County Schools have been in shock and comforting her coworkers and students since she was injured more than a week ago. Armstrong was hired with Guilford County Schools in September 1996 as a teacher assistant before becoming a teacher in 1999. She worked at Welborn Middle Academy of Science and Technology, where she taught career and technical education. “I think that this is a very sad situation for everyone involved. Very heartbreaking,” said Nora Carr, district chief of staff for Guilford County Schools, when Armstrong was shot in late August. Her shooting and death also have raised questions about how domestic protection orders are issued. Armstrong earlier this summer sought a protective order from her estranged husband, but it was denied a month ago. A Guilford County District Court judge ruled that Armstrong “failed to prove grounds” for the request. Armstrong’s husband contested the request for her domestic violence order of protection. Armstong’s death is the eighth fatality resulting from domestic violence in Greensboro this year. Her death marks the city’s nineteenth murder this year.
