Greenville-Gay News for June 28, 2013 The Mabon family has been entertaining: Sallie and Jim hosted the Scouts and their families for lunch before they departed for week long Scout camp. Sallie hosted a ladies luncheon where friends brought salads. So many varieties, so the menu seemed endless. The Methodist congregation had a real musical treat last Sunday. During the summer, the choir takes a three month vacation and church members sign up to host the musical special. The Cornerstone Quartet from Thomas’ Crossroads performed and they were terrific. Or as Angie Williams commented on their gospel songs, “If that doesn’t crank your tractor, check your battery!” Babs Gordon has been enjoying the RV camping life at Lake West Point. Friends from Greenville have been dropping in for visits as she parks the camper at the premiere site on the lake with great views of the dam, much of the lake, and so close to the park’s amenities. The Tuesday game day gang joined her and played Rummikub. Miriam Holliday enjoyed a holiday at the beach with her daughters. Get well wishes go out to Jordan Nash. A correction from last week about Anise Morrison’s new job teaching English in China. She is teaching English in a Disney English school-private schools whose curriculum uses the fun Disney characters and stories to immerse the students in English. The students are not part of the Disney entertainment industry as I wrote. Disney is about to open a Shanghai Disney park though. Congratulations to the Cunningham family: Larkin and Will added Heath to the family. I am sure Carter and Sandra are enjoying the new addition. The men of the Greenville Methodist Church worked with the men of Rust Chapel to clean and clear the brush at the Rust Chapel cemetery-long, hot, hard work but much improved yard. Julie and Chuck Tigner enjoyed a holiday in Mobile to watch Julie’s nephew compete in the Beta Club National Competition. Julie’s nephew comes to Greenville during every school vacation holiday and loves Meriwether. A good student and a senior, he earned a scholarship to Louisville and also won his school’s Beta Club talent competition. Then he won the Kentucky state competition. His band, Rock of Ages, plays, of course, rock. Julie said the band members had to wear a costume and he was Slash from Guns N’ Roses-she thoroughly enjoyed their music. Lots of local folk have been enjoying the beach music on Friday nights at Callaway Gardens. Last week the band was Goodfellas, plus there are other entertainments like the Farmer’s Market, beach, food, etc. This weekend is Wicked Dixie whose Southern classic rock is sure to bring a crowd. Sally Estes and the Rails to Trails Committee welcomed Sam Wellborn to their recent meeting. He is the GDOT Board member from Columbus who has been instrumental in Greenville’s wonderful TE Grant and Streetscape improvements. The Rails to Trails committee is working so hard to get this project accomplished and it is described as being the “spine of the county” that will have great tourism benefits.
